Our Safety Tips and Hints

Safety Tips & Hints

Our recommendations below do not constitute a full list of things to do, just guidance for all detectives to be as safe as possible during your self-guided trail.

  • Always wear comfortable and ‘grippy’ footwear.

  • Always be mindful of the weather and dress appropriately.

  • Make others aware of where you are going, in case of any emergency

  • Drive, park and conduct yourselves safely and legally at all times.

  • Consider taking a day bag or backpack with any “Mysterious Trail” essentials, e.g. a pen and paper, mobile phone, a bottle of water, snacks, suntan lotion and a hat and a jacket

·       Our explicit advice is not to attempt any of our trails in the following circumstances.

o   Without the advice of a GP or similar, should you have any preconditions

o   When unwell or sick at any time

o   When under the influence of drink or drugs

o   If your eyesight or hearing are compromised in any way that could affect your safety or wellbeing and that of others

  • Take genuine care of yourself and others when crossing any roads and look to stick to the highway code at all times.

  • Only look to solve clues once stationary on the pavement or in a pedestrian zone

  • From time to time, parts of the trail routes might become inaccessible due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. road works or flooding). If part of the trail becomes inaccessible, don’t attempt to access it. If safe to do so, find an alternate route around the incumbent barrier - at your own discretion, and continue with the rest of the trail as needed. You can always contact us for missing answer clues!

  • Most of our trails access public roads and spaces. However, trail routes occasionally enter privately owned land with permissive access, e.g. historic buildings, places of worship and gardens. Please be respectful and follow any conditions set by the landowners (e.g. to not enter certain areas due to building works, being quiet in cemeteries)

  • Always keep children or animals in your care safe as a main priority whilst completing a trail. They must be under your express control at all times.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and other people around you.

  • In the improbable event of a dangerous or emergency situation arising, you must stop the trail and follow any relevant guidance below:

    • Get your group away from immediate danger

    • Ask other pedestrians for help

    • Summon the appropriate emergency services

    • Ask emergency services for guidance on your next step(s)

    • Continue to consult emergency and/or health services as needed.
